DIY Sesame Street Joint Twin Birthday Party

“How I Pulled Off an Epic Sesame Street Birthday Bash”

Let’s talk about throwing a Sesame Street birthday party—for twins. That’s right, double the giggles, double the fun, and double the chaos. When my little ones, Chloe and Zoe, turned one, I knew I had to go all out. They were obsessed with Elmo, Bert, Ernie, and, of course, Cookie Monster (who, if we’re being honest, is also my spirit animal). So, a Sesame Street-themed celebration was a no-brainer.

Now, planning a party for one kid is already a task, but for two? Let’s just say my to-do list looked more overwhelming than trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions. But I survived—and dare I say, thrived. So if you’re looking to throw an amazing, budget-friendly, and totally unforgettable Sesame Street bash, I’ve got you covered!

“(A.K.A. The First Impression That Screams “Fun Awaits!”)”

Before the decorations, the cake, or even the party playlist (which will definitely include the Sesame Street theme song on repeat), the invitations set the tone. But have you ever gotten a quote for custom invites? Yeah… I nearly dropped my coffee when I saw the price. Instead of spending a fortune, I made my own using free, customizable Sesame Street invitation templates—and trust me, they looked just as cute as the expensive ones.

The template I used (and am sharing with you!) features bright, sunny colors, adorable illustrations of Bert and Ernie, and cheerful bunting flags that scream celebration. Each template is fully customizable, so you can easily add your twins’ names and party details without spending a cent. Trust me, there’s nothing like saving money and still having something that looks professionally designed.

These invites had bright colors, fun character illustrations, and a playful, happy vibe—basically, everything a Sesame Street party should be. I customized them with Chloe and Zoe’s names, the party details, and a fun little rhyme to get guests excited:

“Sunny days are here to stay,

Come and join the fun and play!

Chloe & Zoe are turning ONE—

So let’s celebrate with everyone!”

And let me tell you, these invitations were a HIT. Even the adults got excited. One mom texted me, “This invite is adorable—my kid won’t stop carrying it around!” That’s how you know you’re doing it right.

Turning My House Into a Mini Sesame Street

Here’s the thing—you don’t need a big budget to make your house feel like it’s straight out of Sesame Street. You just need a little creativity, a lot of color, and some strategic dollar-store finds. I went all-in on the Sesame Street color palette—red, yellow, blue, and green everywhere. Streamers, balloons, tablecloths—you name it, I had it. For the entrance, I made a DIY “123 Sesame Street” sign but changed it to say “123 Chloe & Zoe Street” because, well, it was their day! A little green poster board, some white letters, and BAM—instant party magic.

Of course, no Sesame Street party is complete without the characters. I printed out giant cutouts of Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch, mounted them on cardboard, and placed them around the party area. It looked like the whole gang had actually shown up.

Then there was the photo booth. This was one of the best decisions I made. I set up a bright green backdrop, threw in some oversized sunglasses, Elmo hats, and silly props, and let guests take the cutest pictures. Not only did the kids love it, but the parents totally got into it, too. (I have photographic proof of one dad wearing a Cookie Monster hat while dramatically holding a giant cookie prop.)

Party Games to Delight the Little Guests

“Coloring Pages to the Rescue”

If you’ve ever been to a kids’ party with no structured activities, you know that it quickly turns into a tiny, sugar-fueled riot. So I made sure to plan ahead. The coloring station was the ultimate life-saver. I printed out free Sesame Street coloring pages, set up crayons and markers, and let the kids go wild. It gave parents at least ten peaceful minutes to sip their coffee.

I set up a small table with markers, crayons, and even some glitter glue (because why not?). The kids were thrilled to color their favorite characters, and their masterpieces made adorable keepsakes. My personal favorite was when one little guest decided to give Oscar a pink trash can and a tiara. Talk about a creative twist!

Ending on a Sweet Note: The Cake and Party Food

I considered baking the cake myself. Then I remembered that I once burned a batch of cookies so badly the smoke alarm went off. So, I called a professional. I went with a two-tier Sesame Street cake that had bold fondant stripes, bright colors, and a “Chloe & Zoe Street” sign on top. It was almost too cute to eat—but trust me, that didn’t stop anyone.

For the party food, I kept it simple but on theme. “Elmo’s Pizza Bites” and “Oscar’s Trash Can Snacks” (mini sandwiches wrapped in green paper) were a hit with both the kids and parents. And don’t forget the dessert table! “Cookie Monster Cupcakes” with blue frosting and googly eyes were the first to go.

Wrapping It Up

“Was It Worth It? Absolutely”

By the time the party ended, my house looked like a primary-colored hurricane had hit it, my twins were covered in frosting, and I was exhausted. But as I watched Chloe and Zoe giggling, hugging their new Elmo plushies, and sleepily stuffing one last bite of cake into their mouths, I knew it was completely worth it.

So if you’re planning a Sesame Street birthday party, here’s my advice:

  1. Keep it simple. The kids don’t care if your DIY decorations are a little crooked—they just want to have fun.
  2. Lean into the theme. Go wild with color, get creative with food names, and embrace the chaos.
  3. Take photos! You’ll want to remember these moments (and also, blackmail-worthy dance party footage for when they’re older).

And most importantly—don’t forget the cookies. Because if Cookie Monster has taught us one universal truth, it’s that there is no such thing as too many cookies. In fact, I’m pretty sure if Cookie Monster were in charge of party planning, the entire menu would just be cookies, with a side of cookies, followed by some more cookies for dessert.
